The Voice of the True Shepherd

“This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.”

   John 10:6

·   The Historical Context of Jesus’ Words

“Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the

 cherubim, shine forth!” Psalm 80:1

“He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His

bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.”  Isaiah 40:11

“The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the

broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty

you have ruled them.”  Ezekiel 34:4

“Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people: “You have

scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them.”  Jeremiah 23:2a

“Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed we are your bone

and your flesh. Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel

out and brought them in; and the Lord said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be

ruler over Israel.’”  2 Samuel 5:1-2

“He also chose David His servant, And took him from the sheepfolds; 71 From following the ewes that

had young He brought him, To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance. 72 So he

shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his

  hands.”  Psalm 78:70-72

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  John 10:11

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,”  John 10:14

·   The Immediate Setting of Jesus’ Teaching

“Therefore some of the Pharisees said, ‘This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the

Sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?’ And there was a division among

 them.’”   John 9:16

“So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.”

“The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.”  John 10:31

“Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.

31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will,

God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a

man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”  John 9:30-33

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He

has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight

to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”  Luke 4:18

“What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”  John 9:26

“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I

went and washed and received my sight.”  John 9:11

“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want

to become his disciples?”  John 9:27

“…reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has

spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”  John 9:28-29

“‘You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?’ And they cast him out.”  John 9:34

·   The Amazing Content of Jesus’ Revelation

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way,

that man is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1

“But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.”  John 10:2

“To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads

 them out.”  John 10:3

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast

 out.”  John 6:37

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters

speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is

not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world.”

Psalm 19:1-4

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts,”

   Ecclesiastes 3:11

“A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

       John 10:5

“… my heart stands in awe of Your word.”  Psalm 119:161

“The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”  John 6:3b

“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for

I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.’”  Isaiah 43:1

“For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: “Do not harden your hearts,”  Psalm 95:7-8a
